Message from the Superintendent

dr. mary johnston, superintendent
In just a few short days we will welcome all of our staff and students back for the 2025-26 school year! It’s hard to believe that one summer can fly by so fast, but I hope that each of you got to enjoy some downtime with family and friends during the break. We have been hard at work in Graham ISD participating in professional development, hiring quality staff, and conducting regular facility maintenance to prepare our schools for the new year.

In Graham ISD we are committed to excellence. In fact, our mission is to equip all students for excellence in life. We do this by providing a nurturing, safe learning environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity and collaboration within the community.

I could not be more excited at the team of professionals and support staff we have in GISD. Their commitment to students will fuel individual, class, and team achievements throughout this school year.

Please feel free to connect with us this year and stay engaged during your child’s learning experience. We encourage you to volunteer, sign-up as a substitute teacher, and become involved in our Booster Clubs and PTOs and Class Parents Groups who support student programs and activities. We believe in reflecting the values of our community and seeking authentic partnerships in the learning process.

We hope you will join us on this journey!

Committed to Excellence,

Dr. Johnston
Superintendent

All Texas Public Schools To Enforce New Cell Phone-Free Policy

Graham ISD will join other Texas public schools in implementing and enforcing a new state law that requires K-12th grade students to have their cell phones off and out of sight during school hours. The statewide requirement covers all areas of the school from the first to final bells, and prohibits ALL cell phones, cell phones such as a smartphone or flip phone, tablet, smartwatches, radio device, paging device, headphones, earbuds, gaming device, or any other electronic device capable of telecommunication or digital communication during the instructional day.

Governor Greg Abbott signed a law on June 20 which mandates all Texas districts to adopt a policy banning the use of personal communication devices during school hours. The Graham ISD School Board will consider the policy at their August 6 board workshop and then approve it officially at their August 12 meeting. Parents and students should be prepared for the changes beginning with the first day of school for the 2025-26 school year. GISD will share specific information on policy implementation on campuses for the 2025-2026 school year, as well as have an FAQ published on our website.

School districts across the country who have previously implemented similar policies report decreases in student discipline, less screen time, a reduction in device-related distractions and more focus and attention on student learning and socializing.

High School Chromebooks and Parking Update

We continue to be Committed to Excellence in Graham ISD and are excited to announce some good news for Graham High School students and their families. For the 2025-26 school Year, GISD will not be asking parents to pay a Chromebook user fee. Additionally, students will be able to pick-up parking passes free of charge.
